Patient Access

People with a Learning Disability

We want to make sure you feel able to make the most of your appointment with a GP. If you feel there is any particular change that would help you access health care then please let us know. It may be for example that you do not feel comfortable waiting in the main reception. We can arrange for a quieter area for you to wait. Or maybe you need longer to communicate and understand. Please let us know so that we can accommodate your needs.

Annual Health Checks for People with a Learning Disability

We provide annual health checks for people who have a learning disability. Velma our healthcare assistant will usually get in touch with you or your relative to organise the first appointment. She will send out a short questionnaire for you to fill out yourself or with your carer before the appointment and it is helpful if you can bring this with you.

At this appointment she will find out a bit about you and measure your weight, and blood pressure. She may also take a blood sample. She will then arrange for you to come in to meet one of the doctors for the second part of your health check. During this appointment the doctor will ask some questions about your health and examine you. They will give you some helpful advice about how to stay healthy.

If you think you should have a health check and you haven’t heard from us then please ring the reception and let us know.
